A Cheaper Semrush and Ahrefs API Alternative for Small Teams

Updated 11 min readMarkdown

DataForSEO is a Semrush API alternative for developers who need SEO data inside their own software without buying another reporting suite. At its published Standard rates, search volume for 1,000 Google Ads keywords costs $0.06, 1,000 top 10 Google SERPs cost $0.60, and 1,000 backlink rows cost $0.06. That is $0.72 in estimated API usage charges, not the cost of funding an account: DataForSEO has a $50 minimum top up and a $1 trial credit. Ahrefs API access starts with Lite at $129 a month on the Ahrefs pricing page, while Semrush's Standard API requires a Business subscription, an API add on and purchased units, sold in packages starting at 2 million. The providers' datasets and their total costs are not directly interchangeable.

Every price here is taken from the provider's own website as of 31 October 2026; the URLs are collected at the bottom.

Why the big suite APIs feel expensive for small teams

Neither Ahrefs nor Semrush is overpriced for what it is. Both sell a full SEO product with a web app, reports and rank tracking, and the API is one part of that bundle. The friction comes when the API is the only part you want.

Ahrefs. The Ahrefs pricing page lists Lite at $129 a month, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449 and Enterprise at $1,499 with an annual commitment. Lite, Standard and Advanced all include "API and MCP access", but the maximum rows per API request is 100 on Lite, 250 on Standard and 500 on Advanced. The Ahrefs API docs explain that requests consume API units based on the rows and fields returned, that units are not refundable, and that the default rate limit is 60 requests per minute. Eligible plans include a monthly unit allowance, and extra units are charged as pay as you go.

Semrush. The Semrush API knowledge base says the Standard API is an add on to the Business tier of the SEO Toolkit. After upgrading, your unit balance is still zero, and you buy units in packages of 2,000,000, 5,000,000, 10,000,000 or 20,000,000. Those units renew with your subscription, and the developer docs on API access say unused units expire. The terms ask you to stay under 10 requests per second.

So with both suites, the entry ticket is a monthly plan before you make your first call. If you run a few thousand requests a month, that fixed cost dominates.

Three SEO data jobs: costs and API requirements

The comparison covers three common developer jobs: retrieving keyword search volume, collecting organic SERP results and exporting backlink rows. DataForSEO publishes request level prices for these examples. The Ahrefs and Semrush columns show the requirements for accessing their APIs, because equivalent dollar costs for the same jobs are not established by the cited pricing sources.

This is a comparison of published charges and API access rules, not a claim that $0.72 buys identical data from all three providers. Actual monthly cost also depends on the endpoints, usage volume and reporting work the application requires.

Job DataForSEO Ahrefs API Semrush API
Search volume for 1,000 keywords $0.06 in Standard mode, $0.09 in Live mode (one Google Ads task holds up to 1,000 keywords) Needs a paid plan with API access, from $129 a month on Lite per the Ahrefs pricing page; units charged per row and field Needs the Business tier, the API add on and a unit package; units are spent per request
1,000 Google Organic SERP requests, top 10 organic results each $0.60 Standard, $1.20 Priority, $2.00 Live Same plan requirement; units per row and field Same Business tier and unit requirement
1,000 backlink rows $0.06 (one Backlinks request returning 1,000 rows) Same plan requirement; Lite returns at most 100 rows per request, so 1,000 rows take at least 10 requests Same Business tier and unit requirement

The backlink example uses a $0.024 task charge plus $0.000036 for each returned row. At 1,000 rows, that is $0.024 + $0.036 = $0.06. The SERP example uses 1,000 requests at $0.0006 each, giving $0.60. One Standard Google Ads search volume task covering 1,000 keywords costs $0.06. Together, those published rates produce the $0.72 estimate.

The DataForSEO figures come from its pricing pages for Google Ads search volume, the Google Organic SERP API and Backlinks, all checked on 31 October 2026. Ahrefs does not show a dollar price per API unit on its pricing page, and Semrush's prices for the Business tier and API units are not quoted here, so check Semrush's own pricing before you budget. What the table does show is the structure: on DataForSEO you pay only for the calls you make, while on the suites you pay for a plan first and then spend units inside it.

The $0.72 DataForSEO total is below the stated $1 trial credit at those specific Standard rates. It is an estimate from rate sheets, not the result of running these calls, and changing modes, depth or other billable parameters changes what you spend.

How DataForSEO bills, in one paragraph

DataForSEO is pay as you go with no subscription. You top up at least $50, the balance does not expire according to that page, and each call is charged by API, endpoint, mode and parameters. New accounts get $1 of credit, and a free Sandbox returns sample responses so you can build without spending. SERP calls are cheaper in the queued Standard mode than in Live, and options such as deeper results or search operators raise the price per SERP. There is a full breakdown of those rules, with worked examples, in a separate DataForSEO pricing explainer.

Where DataForSEO is weaker

An Ahrefs API alternative needs to be judged on more than its request price, particularly when backlink data matters. A cheap SEO API only offers good value when the returned fields, coverage and freshness are suitable for the application.

You have to build the reporting layer. API responses are not the same thing as a ready made SEO suite. Charts, saved client views, automated reports and alerts require development and maintenance. If the team depends on the Ahrefs or Semrush interface for its daily work, replacing that interface with an API could cost more developer time than it saves on data.

Backlink data is a judgment call. Ahrefs describes its crawler on its pricing page as the "world's second-most active crawler", and backlink indexes differ between providers. Neither DataForSEO nor Ahrefs publishes a head to head index comparison on the pages cited here, so the honest advice is to pull backlinks for two or three domains you know well from each source and compare them yourself. Ahrefs offers free test queries only for users on a paid plan, and only for its own sample domains, according to its docs, while the DataForSEO trial dollar covers more than 14,000 backlinks according to its trial help article.

Some data is updated less often. DataForSEO Labs, which provides keyword and domain metrics from its own database, lists update cycles of 30 to 90 days for most endpoints on its Labs pricing page. Google Ads keyword data is refreshed when Google updates it, generally mid month. For live rankings, the SERP API fetches results at request time.

Keyword metrics are not automatically equivalent. The inexpensive DataForSEO keyword example comes from Google Ads Keyword Planner data. It should not be treated as proof that Ahrefs or Semrush will return the same figures for the same list. Decide which metric the application actually needs before choosing an endpoint based only on the per request cost.

Prices move. DataForSEO raised prices on several APIs by around 20% on 1 July 2026, including Labs and Backlinks. Cents per call are still small, but older comparisons will understate current costs.

Verdict by team size

Solo developer or side project. If the project needs raw SEO data rather than a reporting dashboard, start with a pay as you go API. Build the integration against the Sandbox, use the trial credit for real requests, and account for the $50 minimum top up before committing. If the project already needs the Ahrefs or Semrush interface, compare the whole workflow rather than only API charges.

Small agency with one technical person. A split setup may make sense: retain a suite subscription for reporting and research, then use a pay as you go API for suitable scheduled data jobs such as rank checks, keyword volume refreshes and backlink pulls for reports. The savings depend on whether the agency can actually reduce its suite costs and whether the extra development and maintenance work is worthwhile.

In house team already using Ahrefs or Semrush. Start with what the current contract actually includes. Ahrefs Lite, Standard and Advanced include API access, with different row limits and unit allowances. A Semrush Business subscription does not automatically make Standard API calls available: API access is an add on and the unit balance starts at zero. Compare the extra cost of the actual requests before adding another provider.

Teams with no developer. Stay with the suite. The API route only saves money if someone can build and maintain the pipeline.

Before you switch

Run the same three jobs on both sides with real data. Note the cost of each call on DataForSEO, and the units each request uses on Ahrefs or Semrush. Then multiply by your real monthly volume rather than by a guess. Set a daily spending limit on the DataForSEO account before you schedule anything; the pricing page lists daily limits for the account and for individual APIs.
